Rich and companies giving to Democrats?
How a New Yorker's cash impacts S.C. races A New York real estate investor helped flood South Carolina with more than $400,000 in donations to State House candidates this election season as he continued his push for the use of tax money to pay for private school education, according to an Associated Press analysis of campaign finance records.

Complacency or Committment
Ok, Democrats. This week has been an eye opener or game changer or however you want to look at it. Here is what I know about Republican campaigning. They are GREAT at it. The minority population does not win the majority vote doing nothing. Most of the time, they win. We can stop that this time (even here in South Carolina). We have got to get busy. It is now or never. Malcolm X once said the "bullet or the ballot". America gave us the ballot, reluctantly and instead of voting we are ......? Complacency is the enemy of change. Nothing ever just happens. If our candidate Senator Obama is going to win, we need to do something to help out. We have hardworking energized Democrats in our area. Where are you? Let us get busy doing some work. There is a new phonebanking center set up off of Hwy 17 in Sangaree at a tax office. The name escapes me now. There is a phonebanking office in N. Charleston. Linda has set up a phone bank in Mt. Pleasant. We need you to donate just an hour a day. What will it be- complacency or committment? |

Obama, on Women in his life
Being a man myself and having three daughters of my own I can understand the true measure of another man by how he treats women in his life. A lot of people that wanted Senator Hillary Clinton can rest assure that even though she might not be on the ticket, not voting or voting for Senator John McCain would be a big mistake. One thing you can always notice about Senator Barack Obama is the way he loves the women in his life, the way he shows incredible respect for his grandmother, and his mother. Watch the way he looks at his wife and how he embraces his daughters to show the world that they are truly loved by their father. This is the way I would want a man to treat my daughters one day.

Dems return home revved up - |
By Robert Behre The Post and Courier Saturday, August 30, 2008
Local Democrats who made the trip to Denver this week are returning home energized by the historic convention.
"It was as good a convention as we've ever had in terms of the production of it and getting the message across," South Carolina Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler said. "The highlight, of course, was Senator (Barack) Obama's speech last night, but the whole occasion ... in the stadium was just breathtaking, to see all those people who turned out."
Charleston businessman and Obama supporter David Agnew, who was attending his fourth convention, said it was by far the best he has seen.
"Some of those conventions haven't seemed that substantive to me, but this one did," he said. "The level of enthusiasm and passion ran high all week."
Waring Howe Jr. said some voters might have wondered what Obama has meant when he has talked about change, but he answered them Thursday night.
"He answered that very specifically in terms of his plans for his form of tax cuts, his reducing our dependency on foreign sources of energy, his presenting a new American face to the world in foreign policy," Howe said.
But the convention wasn't all work and no play.
Howe said parties often kept him up after midnight, and he enjoyed mingling with celebrities such as director Spike Lee, actors Matthew Modine and Susan Sarandon and U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken.
Fowler said those in Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium in Denver couldn't help but be moved listening to Obama on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech. "Everywhere you looked people were wiping their eyes," she added.
U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn told Public Broadcasting Service talk show host Charlie Rose that he choked up a little during the speech, which he said meant the most "to fourth- and fifth-graders who have been told, 'You can be anything you want to be,' but who really did not believe that" until now.
Agnew said the most important message Obama delivered "is that the stakes are high and that Barack Obama is ready to fight for the future of this country."

Key speech at convention - |
|
Clyburn: Obama has 50-50 shot
S.C. representative set to give key speech at convention By Robert Behre (Contact) The Post and Courier Thursday, August 14, 2008
The Post and Courier Rep. Jim Clyburn
House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn hopes his time in the spotlight at the Democratic National Convention will help U.S. Sen. Barack Obama win the presidency and give a boost to his party in South Carolina.
"I would think that our chances of winning in November are probably 50-50," he said Wednesday. "If we were to put together a good campaign, stay on message ... I think we'll be successful. It's a historic election in so many ways, and what we have here is an opportunity to demonstrate to the American people that Democrats ought to be back in charge of the White House."
Clyburn, who addressed the party's 2004 convention as vice chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said he's tentatively scheduled to speak at the convention Aug. 27. It's one of the biggest nights of the convention, with former President Clinton and Obama's wife, Michelle, also expected to give speeches.
The Democrats haven't unveiled a detailed program of their Aug. 25-28 convention, though the party announced Wednesday that former Virginia governor and Senate candidate Mark Warner will give the keynote speech.
One potential drama to the convention will be to see how well the party — which saw an extended and hotly fought primary battle between Obama and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York — comes together. One lingering question is whether Clinton's name will be placed into nomination so her delegates have a chance to vote for her. Clyburn said he hopes it is not.
"I do not believe that would be productive at all. It's one thing to go to Denver unified. We need to leave Denver unified," he said. "The extent to which the American people do not think we've got it together as a party and are not together as Democrats will be counterproductive."
Asked whether former senator and presidential candidate John Edwards' confession of marital infidelity would affect Democrats' moods as they head toward Denver, Clyburn replied, "I don't think it will have any impact at all."
Clyburn said he expected to work on his address this weekend, but he noted that the most important speech will come when Obama accepts the nomination.
"Not just because of the historical aspect of him being the nominee, but it occurring on the 45 anniversary of the 'I have a dream' speech (by civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.) in the 40th year of the King assassination and in the 60th year that our own state's senator (Strom Thurmond) bolted the party over the integration of the armed services.
"All of that to me makes it a very historic convention and makes that speech a very historic speech." While the convention ultimately will set the tone for the presidential race, it also could influence the success of South Carolina Democrats running this fall.
"We have an outside chance of winning this state (for Obama), but a very good chance of picking up legislative seats in South Carolina, all of which would bode well for this party coming back to its historical role," Clyburn said.
