Candidates for Governor and 1st Congressional District Speak to Berkeley County Democrats   State Sen. Vincent Sheheen, candidate for governor, and Col. Robert Burton, USAF Ret., candidate for the 1st congressional district, spoke to Berkeley County Democrats at their monthly meeting on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at Berkeley Electric Co-op in Goose Creek. Both candidates shared their personal and political histories and their platforms. Sen. Sheheen focused on his economic and educational platform. He noted that small business is the economic backbone of South Carolina and said that he would place more emphasis on supporting and growing small business under his administration. The son of a school teacher and a small town grocer, he believes that public education can be strengthened by high quality teachers, lower class sizes, and funding equity across school districts.  He expressed his belief that the state cigarette tax, the lowest in the country, should be raised and the proceeds used for health care. Col. Burton discussed his background as an Air Force officer and a pilot for Delta Air Lines. He noted his history of support for affordable housing, his belief that the Adjunct General’s office should be an appointed post. Gubernatorial candidates, Dr. Jim Rex, and Dwight Drake, will speak at the Democratic county convention on Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 9:00a.m. -12:00 noon at Berkeley Middle School.

Help Still Needed With Health Care Reform

Both House and Senate have now passed health care reform legislation. Differences in the bills are being ironed out in a conference committee. You can still make a difference. Write your senators and representatives and tell them to pass the legislation when it comes out of committee.

Principles of President Obama’s Health Care Reform

No discrimination for pre-existing conditions: Insurance companies will be prohibited from refusing you coverage because of your medical history.

• No exorbitant out-of-pocket expenses, deductibles, or co-pays: Insurance companies will have to abide by yearly caps on how much they can charge for out-of-pocket expenses.

• No cost sharing for preventive care: Insurance companies must fully cover, without charge regular check-ups and tests that help you prevent illness such as mammograms or eyes and foot exams for diabetics.

• No dropping of coverage for Seriously Ill: Insurance companies will be prohibited from dropping or watering down insurance coverage for those who become seriously ill.

• No gender discrimination: Insurance companies will be prohibited from charging you more because of your gender.

• No annual or lifetime caps on coverage: Insurance companies will be prevented from placing annual or lifetime caps on the coverage you receive.

• Extended coverage for young adults; Children would continue to be eligible for family coverage through the age of 26.

• Guaranteed insurance renewal: Insurance companies will be required to renew any policy as long as the policy holder pays their premiums in full. Insurance companies won’t be allowed to refuse renewal because someone becomes ill.

How Will We Pay For Care

Health care will be paid for by employer/employee payments and some form of tax on those making more than $250,000.00 per year. Cost- cutting measures in health care will also help with funding. The government will pick up at least some costs for those too poor or disables to contribute.

IF YOU LIKE THE PLAN AND DOCTORS YOU HAVE NOW, YOU CAN KEEP THEM. NO ONE WILL FORCE YOU CHANGE. HEALTH CARE WILL NOT BE
